FoodAI Group contribute to defining the scope of Food Informatics

Invited by the Chief Editor of The Innovation Informatics, in the article named “Food Informatics: Leveraging data and knowledge to advance food systems,” Mabel Zitong Leow, Caili Fu, and Dachuan Zhang review existing uses of the term Food Informatics and propose an updated definition:

Food Informatics is an interdisciplinary field that acquires, organizes, analyzes, and interprets food-related data and knowledge.  It lies at the intersection of food science, informatics, and computational science, aiming to enable knowledge discovery, decision-making, and optimization across food systems.

The article highlights the multi-scale nature of Food Informatics, spanning molecular, food product, and system-level information, and discusses how the field connects with related areas such as AI in Food Science, Food Omics, Food Computing, and Computational Gastronomy. By providing a clearer conceptual framework, the commentary contributes to ongoing efforts to establish Food Informatics as a coherent and impactful interdisciplinary field.
